'Zodiac:' Movie location map of David Fincher's serial killer masterpiece

View as Map

From 1997's The Game to 2010's The Social Network, noted auteur David Fincher has had a fixation with the Bay Area. Turning ten this year, Zodiac, which only pulled in $33 million in the United States on a $65 million budget, remains arguably his best film to date. Chronicling the 1970s killing spree of the person christened the Zodiac Killer, based on the cryptogram letters sent to local media, the movie features several key Bay Area locales.

The Chronicle building, the Castro Theatre, and Original Joe's area all featured. The most harrowing among them, Lake Berryessa. The scene where victims Bryan Hartnell and Cecelia Shepard are stabbed during a quiet and sunny afternoon is one of cinema's most terrifying.

While some of the movie was shot in Toronto, most of it was filmed right here in the Bay Area. We've identified several locations. Enjoy.

So much of the movie happens inside the San Francisco Chronicle building, but mainly it’s the backdrop where Robert Graysmith (played by Jake Gyllenhaal) works as a cartoonist alongside police beat reporter Paul Avery (played by Robert Downey Jr.). It’s also where the Zodiac sends his letters to the editor.

The original Original Joe’s was the location for the worst first date ever, aka when Robert shows up late to meet Melanie. She orders the penne vodka with cream sauce after Robert recommends “the pasta.”

Old San Francisco Transbay Terminal

The now demolished Timothy L. Pflueger-designed Transbay Terminal provided an Art Deco backdrop, complete with streamline modern Greyhound bus, for Inspector David Toschi to call his captain about the first Zodiac update in years.

San Francisco City Hall

Inspector Toschi meets Captain Mulroney in the lobby to review the first letter the Zodiac sent to the press in over three years. He's also told that the two men with Mulroney are from Internal Affairs. Mulroney leans in and whispers "we need to talk."

Castro Theatre

Inspector Toschi tells Robert Graysmith to "finish the book" and then walks out of the diner. For some reason the Castro Theatre is right there despite the rest of the block not being Castro Street.
