Designed by Ernest Born in 1949—one of the masterminds behind the Glen Park BART Station—this Great Highway home in the Outer Sunset has, depending on how you see it, benefited from a major expansion nearly 60 years later. In 2006, Aidlin-Darling added a contemporary three-story master suite and pavilion next to the architect’s original structure. All of it connected by a second-story frosted-glass bridge.
The full monty is now available off-market for $8 million.
Featuring four bedrooms and four bathrooms, and 2020 Great Highway comes with towering skylights and floor-to-ceiling windows that flood the original space with natural light. Its living room wows with 21-foot ceilings, a brick fireplace, and a wooden pole structure affixed to the wall for hanging art (even though it looks like a work of on its own).
The newer structure keeps things equally simple, with wood flooring, clean lines, and floor-to-ceiling windows albeit with a more contemporary vibe. In addition to the aforementioned glass skybridge, a large garden with mature cypress and pine trees keeps both buildings in perfect harmony.
Also of note, Born not only designed but lived in this home with his wife, Esther. It’s listed through Mark Vasquez and Butch Haze of Compass.
