San Francisco weekend traffic and transit: Clusterfest

A weekly weekend warning about what’ll hold you up

Memorial Day has come and gone, but another beautiful San Francisco weekend is upon us, and it’s looking like a long summer of clear skies and smooth sailing from here on out.

Or at least, it’ll be smooth most of the time; whenever the weekend approaches, there’s always at least a few potential snags and stuff-ups on the horizon, usually in the form of street closures and reroutes that can put a crimp in weekend plans if they’re not planned for.

This week, SFMTA warns drivers and Muni riders that the commencement of the second Comedy Central Clusterfest June 1 through June 3 will have ramifications even outside of the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium.

The inaugural Clusterfest in 2017 aimed at bringing Outside Lands-style hype to a big-ticket live comedy event, live music included. This year’s lineup boasts the likes of Amy Schumer, Trevor Noah, Jon Stewart, and even Wu Tang Clan.

It also boasts some potential traffic hassles across all three days, both for ticket holders and those passing by, according to SFMTA, which cautions “significant impacts to normal traffic patterns [mean] street closures will be required prior to events and activities” even several days after the fest wraps up.

Here’s the rundown on this cluster of a different sort:

  • May 31-June 4: Larkin and Polk close between Hayes and McAllister, Grove closes between Van Ness and Polk.
  • May 29-June 5: The southbound lane of Larkin between Grove and McAllister will close, along with the two far-right northbound lanes between Grove and McCallister.
  • May 31-June 5: Grove Street closes between Larkin and Hyde.
  • May 28-June 6: Grove Street will close between Polk and Larkin, and Fulton Street closes between Larkin and Hyde.

The city also warns that the 19 Polk bus will have to reroute around these closures all week.
