Hundreds of thousands of people across the country will march Saturday, March 24 to advocate for gun control following a Florida high school shooting that killed 17. According to the March For Our Lives website, the purpose of the event is to “come together to support the national movement calling on lawmakers to make students’ safety a priority and pass common sense gun legislation.”
While the D.C. event is the primary one—roughly 500,000 people are anticipated to attend—there will be more than 800 satellite marches around the country. The San Francisco event will kick off at 1 p.m. with speakers, while Oakland’s will start at 10 a.m. Start times will vary at each march.
Traffic in San Francisco will be sluggish around the Market Street, Civic Center, and the Embarcadero. According to SF MTA, “The event will stage a rally at Civic Center Plaza at 1 p.m. followed by a march at 2:30 p.m. from Civic Center Plaza to Market Street ending at Embarcadero Plaza (formerly Justin Herman Plaza). The march may not completely clear Market Street until 5 p.m. All times are subject to change.”
More details will follow. Until then, here are the times and locations of the Bay Area marches/rallies happening on Saturday:
