The SFMTA announced on Thursday that it will suspend most Muni service to the Presidio and the Marina on Saturday, citing a planned political rally and corresponding counterprotests.
The transit authority’s blog warns riders:
There will be NO Muni service in the Presidio or Marina neighborhoods starting at noon. There will be NO SERVICE for the 76X Marin headlands route all day Saturday. The 28 19th Avenue route WILL NOT SERVE the Golden Gate Bridge Toll Plaza Saturday.
[...] The following Muni routes will be rerouted: 22 Fillmore, 28 19th Avenue, 30 Stockton, 43 Masonic and 45 Union/Stockton.
SFMTA also warns that the E Embarcadero, F Market & Wharves, 5 Fulton, 19 Polk and 21 Hayes may be rerouted, depending on what happens. Buses will replace the F Market rail line and the cable car lines for the day.
Patriot Prayer, a Portland-based right-wing group, plans a rally at Crissy Field on Saturday at 2 p.m., with some 400-plus people saying via Facebook they plan to attend. The group’s Facebook page insists it will be a friendly and peaceful gathering:
This is an opportunity for moderate americans [sic] to come in with opposing views. We will not allow the extremists to tear apart this country. [...] No extremists will be allowed in. No Nazis, Communist, KKK, Antifa, white supremacist.
Despite the assurances, locals have planned more than a dozen counterprotests over the weekend, including one exclusively for clowns and one for “kayakers, boaters, sailors, surfers, and bay swimmers” protesting via the bay itself.
SFMTA notes that the city plans no street closures in response to any of the gatherings, although “parking will NOT be allowed on all streets around the Plaza or in the garage” during planned counterprotests at Civic Center.
