See designs for new 13-story Tenderloin building

O’Farrell Street mid-rise would replace old garage

In October of 2016, a developer went to the city with a pitch for the “demolition of an existing 2-story parking garage and replace with a new, 12-story multi-family housing building containing 112 units” at 550 O’Farrell Street, presently a garage from 1924.

In a more detailed proposal this week, the building has grown to 13 stories and 115 units, plus:

Two levels of parking at grade and basement level with 21 parking stalls. [...] Open space is provided with some private balconies and two large common open space areas, one on level two and another on the roof.

The designs by Rob Zirkle as architecture firm Brick reveal stone cladding on the first few floors, with the floors above that covered in concrete and metal panels and terracotta at various spots on the facade.

The O’Farrell Street site between Jones and Leavenworth would put the new building, with 86 market-rate units and 29 affordable homes, right smack dab in the heart of the Tenderloin. Though as SocketSite points out, the existing building has some historic significance, which could trip up the plans.
