One of Mission Bay’s main arteries into SoMa, the Lefty O’Doul drawbridge on Third Street, will close for over a month beginning Monday, December 11. The closure will last until January 26.
Crews will work on counterweight repair during the closure. The bridge’s counterweight allows the structure to rise for watercraft passing. Speaking of which, the bridge will be up during its closure allowing for any and all boats and water vehicles to pass.
However, the vehicular and foot traffic will have to cross over on the Fourth Street bridge unit O’Doul reopens.
The drawbridge opened in 1933 and was rechristened in 1969 in honor of the baseball player Lefty O'Doul. It’s been used in such cinematic gems as A View to a Kill and San Andreas.
