Gear Up for SF Pride with this ‘Dykes on Bikes’ Photo Gallery

Give it up for those who rev up the parade each year

In 1976, a small troop of about 20 to 25 women on motorcycles gathered at the head of the San Francisco Pride Parade, and a tradition began.

That same year, the name Dykes on Bikes was coined for this rambunctious lesbian group, and a larger movement took off.

Since then, the Dykes on Bikes have changed their name to the Women’s Motorcycle Contingent, grown exponentially, and inaugurated chapters as far as Iceland and Aukland.

Celebrate 40 years of Dykes on Bikes with this photo roundup. And don’t forget to cheer them on as they kickoff the Pride parade this Sunday.
