Adorable, well-appointed cottages that are short on space but high on style seem to be a specialty in Bernal Heights. The latest to hit the market is a workman's cottage that is so small that it can barely be seen from the street, especially since it is tucked behind a hedge. There are only 750 square feet of space in the entire two-bedroom, one-bathroom place. But up close, nearly every detail about the cottage is perfect, from the rustic wooden front door through to the spiral staircase that twists into the flower-drenched back garden. There's even a hammock strung between two posts out back.
The main living space of the house is fairly open, but its small size becomes apparent in its layout. The big kitchen has a farm sink and plenty of room for a dining area. The living room space, however, is awkwardly shaped and doesn't provide much room for furniture. One bedroom sits right off of the living space through huge pocket doors. It has lots of windows, but the closet seems to be situated behind some floor-to-ceiling curtains. What seems to be the second bedroom is less inviting, with tile floors and a position right off the kitchen that feels more appropriate for a study or laundry room. There is an attic upstairs that offers some expansion opportunities if the space starts to feel too crammed.
