Metallica Guitarist Kirk Hammett's Former Abode Wants $12.5M

New, 9 comments

For a goodly 16 years, Metallica guitarist and Hair Club for Men candidate Kirk Hammett laid his head at this grand, thoroughly traditional mansion in Pacific Heights' Gold Coast. He let go of the property in 2009 for $7.6 million. One careful remodel and lots and lots of velvety flocked wall coverings later, the subsequent owner listed the home for $9.25 million in 2012. It sat on the market for seven months without landing a buyer. Now it's back again and looking for $12.5 million, $3.25 million more than last time around.

Designed by Edgar Mathews in 1899, the home spans a massive 8,400 square feet and is packed with period details, from wood coffered ceilings and hand-painted moldings to an intricate marble and wood fireplace and carved wainscoting. It's got eight bedrooms, seven bathrooms (plus three half-baths), a formal dining room, a library with lovely built-ins, a 2,000-bottle wine cellar complete with an antique safe, and a motorcourt in addition to the garage. There is also a billiard room down below, should anyone need a rest from slouchy draperies and Carrara-onset blindness.
