Eviction Watch

Dozens of residents of San Mateo's Park Royal Apartments and their supporters protested last week over residents' impending evictions in a county that lacks the tenant protections of San Francisco. For the past two years, management company Woodmont Real Estate Services has not been renewing leases in preparation for renovations at the six-building property, and tenants were given 60 days' notice to vacate. The improvements will bring higher rents (updated one-bedrooms start at $2,468 per month, two-bedrooms at $3,198), rates about $1,000 more than one tenant paid when he moved in six years ago.
