The most recent attempt to place additional limitations on the use of the Ellis Act in San Francisco has failed in the state legislature. Landlords in the city would have been required to own a rental property for at least five years before evicting tenants under the proposed legislation, which was backed by Mayor Ed Lee and several big tech companies. Business groups, however, opposed the law because it would place greater restrictions on San Francisco than on other parts of the state. Mark Leno, the state senator who sponsored the bill, has not yet decided whether to resubmit it. [SF Business Times]
