Crushing Commute

New, 1 comment

Weekly ridership on BART has jumped by 100,000 riders in just five years to a record 420,000. BART is struggling to keep up with the rapid growth because of inadequate infrastructure, including aging railcars and insufficient crossover tracks that limit the system's ability to send more trains to the most crowded stations. New railcars that offer more space for standing room have been ordered, but they won't start carrying passengers until late 2016. BART is considering other short- and long-term fixes, but until then, riders have developed one of their own: upstreaming. [SFGate]
