Five Shall Be the Number

Retired San Francisco architect Eugene Lew is proposing a solution to the housing crisis: new five-story, five-unit buildings around shared outdoor gardens. Lew calls his concept "Dom-I-City," and envisions full-floor units with three bedrooms, two baths, and 1,400 square feet that would be perfect for families. The buildings could fit in neighborhoods like the Sunset or the unused Balboa Reservoir. Though it's the perfect number for Lew, we'd wager five is just enough to madden future neighbors yet not nearly enough to achieve serious impact, while falling well below the unit count (10) that would trigger the below-market-rate housing requirement.
