The swoon-worthy landmark brick mansion at 1735 Franklin Street has struggled to find a buyer since first going up for sale last August asking $9.7 million. It went off the market for a bit, then came back in late January for the same $9.7 million price—only to drop to $8.995 million earlier this month. No buyers have been forthcoming, so the mansion seems to be trying a different tactic by also going on the rental market and listing on Craigslist. The huge, stately eight-bedroom home is seeking $35,000 per month from any displaced millionaires who wish to occupy its absolutely gorgeous interiors.
Sure, that's nearly the cost of tuition at an elite college, but it's a steal compared with the $7,000/nightly ($210,000 monthly!) you'd shell out on Airbnb to take over the old Alioto mansion.
So why can't this gorgeous place find a buyer? It does sit in a strange location, right on busy Franklin Street, on the edge of Pacific Heights and among mostly large buildings—not other single-family homes. Additionally, many homes with big price tags like this one take longer to sell. In the meantime, interested renters will have access to the chef's kitchen, the six fireplaces, and parking for four cars. Pets and rental terms are both negotiable. So ... does that mean we can spend $1,100 and pretend to live there just for a day?
