Proposals for a second BART tube to run from the East Bay to San Francisco are getting serious attention, but a new tube could take more than 30 years to build. The tube, which could land in Mission Bay, would increase the system's capacity and allow BART to run 24 hours a day. However, the project would cost billions and BART's current priorities are more focused on adding short-term capacity by running extra services during commute times and expanding BART's rail car fleet.
