Lucky Penny, the 24-hour diner at Geary and Masonic, is set to shutter by the end of this week to make way for new housing. The diner's replacement will be a seven-story building designed by RG Architecture with 21 two-to-four (yes, four!) bedroom apartments over three floors. The rest of the space will go to office and retail, and there will be two levels of parking underground.
Although an initial glassy rendering has been released, RG Architecture is continuing to incorporate feedback from neighbors and the Planning Department, according to Hoodline. However, the current design could be reflective of the residential/office hybrid that this place will be. The diner has been around since the 1960s, but the neighborhood has changed around it. The new apartments will next door to a Trader Joe's and near the Target/Best Buy complex on Masonic.
