Toxic Waste Wire

Safeway will pay nearly $10 million to settle a lawsuit over its disposal of hazardous waste. The suit, filed in Oakland and backed by 41 district attorneys statewide, alleges that the grocery chain illegally dumped hazardous materials including medication, aerosols, batteries, and electronics in more than 500 landfills over seven years. Prosecutors also said the chain was throwing out customers' prescription records without safeguarding their privacy. [Bay City News]
