Planned streetscape improvements on Mission Street are being challenged by residents who think that the upgrades will bring gentrification and higher rents. At a recent public meeting about the Mission Street Public Life Plan, most speakers were adamantly opposed to any improvements, particularly those that focused on beautification schemes like tree planting and public art. The plan also includes transit and pedestrian-safety elements such as bulb-outs and the conversion of two traffic lanes into Muni-only lanes. [Streetsblog]
