Atherton's $28M English Tudor Estate Is Chintzy to the Core

New, 1 comment

The latest very expensive Atherton property to come on the market is an English Tudor-style estate on nearly three acres that is asking $28 million. Atherton is, of course, no stranger to very expensive sales, with four of the Bay Area's ten most expensive sales of 2014 located within its boundaries. The home last sold way back in 1988 for $2.325 million and was totally renovated during the 1990s. The six-bedroom, seven-bathroom property now has 9,000 square feet and includes a guest house, a gatehouse, a pool house, and tennis courts.

The interiors of the main house are filled with box-beam ceilings, ornate stone fireplaces, and stained glass windows. There are also chintz-covered, occasionally clashy furnishings—it all comes to a head in the breakfast nook!—that, according to the listing, are negotiable with a sale. The real highlight of the property, however, is the green, flowery landscape that feels like something out of The Secret Garden. A two-story outdoor gazebo connected to the main house overlooks it all, while stone paths lead from building to building.
