The new Azure rental building (previously named Sol) is well on its way to making a big contribution to the ever-changing Mission Bay skyline. Designed by HKS Architects, the building's main tower topped out this week at 16 stories; the adjacent podium, which takes up two-thirds of the site, reached five stories. When complete, Azure will offer 164 one-bedrooms and 109 two-bedrooms, for a total of 273 new units. Amenities will include a fitness center, a demonstration kitchen, a bicycle repair room, and a fire pit. The building will also be surrounded by public parks on three sides. "The podium is designed to bring life onto the street level, with walk-up residences, terraces, planter boxes, and a wood panel demarking the residential entries," says HKS associate principal Brendan Dunnigan. On the facade the architects opted for a reflective glass and metal panel system that will pick up the blue (ahem, azure!) of the Bay and the green of the hills and parks. Developer Equity Residential says the building will be open by spring 2015.
