San Francisco has added 2,290 new units of housing so far this year—that's already more than the city added in all of 2013, according to Mayor Ed Lee. The new units, mostly in high-rises near the Transbay Transit Center, are a first step toward the 30,000 units the mayor would like to build or rehabilitate by 2020. According to the Planning Department, there are nearly 50,000 new housing units in the pipeline, but even higher numbers would be needed for the market to become affordable for middle-income earners.
