After building 8,300 linear feet of tunnels connecting SoMa to Chinatown, the city's tunnel-boring machines have finished their job and are being cut into twenty-foot sections to be extracted from the ground. Original plans were for them to come out at Washington Square Park or Columbus Avenue, but after objections the site was switched to the abandoned Pagoda Palace Theater. The next step for the Central Subway is to construct stations and install tracks, overhead wires and electronic systems. [SFGate]
