Designs for the new Candlestick Point development project have pitted the fire department against planners and Supervisor Scott Weiner over street widths. Original plans called for nearly all of the new neighborhood's 37 miles of streets to be 20 feet wide in an effort to reduce driving speeds and make the neighborhood more walkable. Now, with the fire department saying that the streets are too narrow for ladder trucks, the Planning Department has proposed widening most streets by six feet. [SF Examiner]
