New Mixed-Use Building Coming to Kearny Street in Chinatown

A recent look at the Planning Department's Preliminary Project Assessment letters suggests that the dilapidated one-story commercial building at 829 Kearny may be destined for the wrecking ball. In its place, project sponsor Curtis Chan wants to build a new four-story mixed-use structure with 1,800 square feet of ground-floor retail. The new building would also house assembly and instructional space for the Buddha's Universal Church, as well as a single residential unit. Project renderings have yet to be released and the construction timeline is still up in the air. Though there are no guarantees that the new mixed-user will be an architectural stunner, it seems safe to assume that few will lament the loss of the building that it will replace.
