By the end of the decade, 16th Street, which starts in the Castro and ends right where the Golden State Warriors plan to build their new arena, will be unrecognizable. With new housing units popping up on and around the 2.3-mile corridor, the SFMTA is now ready to invest in serious upgrades. Ideas for sprucing up the street include new bus-only lanes, wider sidewalks, high-visibility crosswalks and operational improvements to the intersection underneath Highway 280. The changes will save transit riders on the notoriously crowded and sluggish 22 Fillmore, which runs down 16th for a considerable part of its route, an estimated five minutes in each direction. Officials at the SFMTA have already applied for $10.3M in Federal Government TIGER grants to help move the project forward, but won't implement the upgrades until 2018.
