Looking back at BART

The current construction of the Central Subway may be causing some construction issues across the city, but it's nothing like when BART was built on Mission Street and stations were built by simply digging a giant hole in the ground and then covering it back up. BART's Mission construction was, however, one of the first times that a tunnel boring machine was used in the US to connect stations. Residents at the time were conflicted about the changes BART was supposed to bring the neighborhood, from 14,000 new residences to taco stands and stores selling genuine (made on Valencia Street) blankets and souvenirs.
