Two machines longer than football fields are pushing forward construction of the $1.6 billion Central Subway project linking Caltrain to Chinatown. The machines are working 12 hours a day to burrow 20-foot-wide tunnels beneath the city and have passed beneath some of downtown's busiest shopping areas without any surface-level disruptions. Although the tunneling will finish this summer, the Central Subway won't take its first passengers until 2019. [SFGate]
