A recently leaked 2010 document claims that the new Bay Bridge span used irregular welds on the road deck that could fail in an earthquake. The welds could prevent the bridge from reopening quickly in an emergency. Today, a Caltrans official stated that the welds will not be an issue in an earthquake, but admitted there are "minor issues" on 10 on the 26 road deck connections. [SFGate/SF Appeal]
