Massive Cole Valley Victorian Hits the Market for a Cool $3.4M

New, 11 comments

199 Carl Street hit the market yesterday, and the 114-year-old mansion has lot to desire. Designed by Swedish architect August Nordin (of Swedish American Hall fame) in 1912, but Sanborn maps show it much earlier than that, between 1900-1905. The single-family house is massive, with 4BD/2.5BA+ and four levels of living space, including a finished attic and a full-floor ballroom in the basement for all your party needs. This place clearly used to be full-on luxury, with loads of mahogany panelling, decorative ceilings, built-ins and fireplaces. But there's some updating to be done, like the dated wall-to-wall carpeting, and the kitchen and bathrooms looks straight out of the 1950s. The backyard also needs some work. Even though it's not a local landmark, the house is considered historic by the Planning Department, so future buyers should be aware of that when contemplating any changes. · 199 Carl Street, San Francisco CA [Redfin]
