Major construction at the former Metro Theater at 2055 Union Street has concluded, with the landmark building emerging as an Equinox gym. The eleven-month long renovation included a complete rehab of the theater's interior, although the historic facade as well as the Anthony Heinsbergen-designed Art Deco murals in the east and west walls remain intact. The remodel added three full floors of gym space, a community room available to neighborhood groups, a multi-purpose auditorium and new retail space. Illy Coffee will be moving into one of the new storefronts. According to the Equinox Union Street Twitter account, the marquee sign on the front of the building was recently turned on for the first time in eight years and will light up during the gym's business hours each day. Equinox Union Street is slated for a Summer 2014 opening.
