Excavation Complete at Transbay Transit Center in South Beach

New, 20 comments

More than three years after first breaking ground, the future Transbay Transit Center has officially completed excavation. The four-block long mega project has dug, scooped and hauled away 640,000 cubic yards of dirt, or "the equivalent of 120 Olympic size swimming pools." Workers will now focus on completing the five foot thick foundation that begun last year, after which structural steel can finally begin to rise. Dubbed the "Grand Central of the West," the transit center will house 11 regional transportation lines when it opens and (fingers crossed) both Caltrain and California High Speed Rail in the future. The center is currently on schedule to open in late 2017.
