The Bay Bridge's Bay Lights could be set to get another 10 years or more of life, but John King has a different take—that we should appreciate the point of ephemeral art. The Bay Area Toll Authority votes today on an extension for the Bay Lights in which Caltrans would take over ownership and maintenance of the project at $250K per year if Illuminate the Arts can raise $4 million to upgrade the lights. King argues that flatness of the work ("glowing folded napkins in the dark") doesn't do justice to a robust and very 3-D bridge—ouch!—but adds that artist Leo Villareal himself conceived the project as ephemeral.
