Today the structural steel assembly at the Transbay Transit Center officially got under way as a construction crane lifted the first above-ground beam column into place. Though work began on the center way back in 2010, all of that progress has heretofore taken place underground. To mark the occasion ceremonially, reporters arriving on public transit (because no parking, obvs) joined dignitaries wearing sturdy shoes. The center is expected to go into service in 2017.
