Welp, turns out it was the Coast Guard that ultimately scuttled the Google barge, the four-story mass of shipping containers that floated temporarily off the shore of Treasure Island last year. In particular, officials were concerned about fire hazards—with fuel stores on deck to the tune of 5,000 gallons—and the only fire exit in sight being the, uh, ocean. In typical Google fashion, some of the Coast Guard officials involved had to sign NDAs. [SFGate]
