Until this week's announcement of a partnership to build a mall with retail developer Macerich, Lennar had been going it alone in the redevelopment of massive sites around Hunters Point and Candlestick Point. The first stores in the outdoor mall will begin opening in 2017 and could be a catalyst for attracting other developers that are crucial to the redevelopment's success. If Lennar can prove that it can pull in new retail and homebuyers to the currently disconnected neighborhood, building momentum could make the previously neglected area a new hotspot.
