OMG Shoes

Hoodline has a remembrance of the Alamo Square shoe garden, which evolved from a Rec and Park gardener's enterprising attempt to protect saplings from dogs by planting them in discarded footwear. The garden eventually grew into a kind of collaborative crowd-sourced art project, but was removed in 2011 as Rec and Park prepared to renovate the park restrooms—and was never brought back because, according to Rec and Park, non-biodegradable shoes created an environmental hazard. Now a neighborhood group wants to, erm, kickstart a revival. [Hoodline/Photo via TracyElaine]
