Changing of the Guard

Next week Rec and Parks will kick off the first phase of a request for proposals for a retrofit of the Palace of Fine Arts. The department wants a tenant with the means to make structural and mechanical upgrades—to the tune of $10–$20 million—and divine some sort of recreational use to succeed the Innovation Hangar, whose lease expires in 2016. Officials would like to see a new public space behind the famous rotunda and perhaps an entry sequence where the public can actually make use of the structure's historic doors.
