Oakland landlords looking to evict tenants just got broad new powers. This week the Oakland City Council amended the Nuisance Eviction Ordinance, a 10-year-old law that lets officials initiate evictions against tenants who face drugs or weapons charges. The amendment expands the definition of "nuisance" to include solicitation, gambling, and prostitution—and in such broad terms that charges don't have to be brought, or even a warrant obtained, against a tenant before the eviction process begins.
