Rental prices are the bane of San Francisco's existence right now. They're higher than ever, and in fact, in many cases they're about as high as a mortgage payment. We started investigating: down payment aside, what can you buy in San Francisco for the same monthly mortgage payment amount as you would pay in rent? This week, we're looking at a $4,075/month payment, which is the current average rent for a two bedroom apartment. We found two 2-bedroom units in NoPa - one for rent, and one for sale. Which looks like the better deal: renting or buying? Let's find out.
First up is the property for rent, at 1901 Eddy. This two bedroom, two bathroom comes with an office/den, large private deck, and private parking for one car. The square footage is unspecified, but it looks pretty spacious. There's also a shared garden, laundry on the premises, and additional storage available for $250/month. The kitchen is modern with a nice stainless fridge and dishwasher, but the stove and cabinetry are nothing special. There's hardwood in the living areas but the bedrooms are carpeted. The price tag is $3,995/month.
