After years of planning, appeals, Historic Preservation meetings and even more appeals, construction has finally begun on 55 Laguna Street in Hayes Valley. The campus of the former San Francisco State Teacher's College and later UC Berkeley Extension is currently demolishing all non-historic buildings and ripping up the many dilapidated surface parking lots that cover the area. The largest building, known as Middle Hall, will be renovated and six new buildings will be added to the site to create 336 apartments. 110 units will be designated for LGBT seniors, and 50 units will be low-income reserved. The new campus will also include a community center, retail space and senior services.
