Problems on the Bay Area's aging Caltrain system are more apparent than usual this week as mechanical problems slowed the entire system both Monday and Tuesday. 20 of the fleet's 29 diesel locomotives are over 25 years old, and major upgrades are not expected to be completed until Caltrain goes fully electric in 2019 (at the earliest). Still, the persistent problems are not discouraging many riders as figures show more than 47,000 people currently ride the train system each weekday--their highest total ever. [SF Examiner]
