City Plans Japantown's Foreseeable Future and Beyond

A finalized plan for the awkwardly named Japantown Cultural Heritage and Economic Sustainability Strategy has been drafted by the Japantown Organizing Committee, "to focus specifically on how to preserve and promote a neighborhood's cultural heritage." The JCHESS outlines every facet of Japantown's future, including its buildings, business development, cultural activities, events and public spaces. These decisions will be determined by the creation of entities such as a Japantown Community Development Corporation, Community Land Trust, and Community Benefits District, among others. The JCHESS is to be presented to the Planning Commission today, and plans to return to City Hall in September, with support from the various commissions and the Board of Supervisors, in hopes of becoming city policy.
