Even with the integrity of up to 2,300 rods in question on the new eastern span of the Bay Bridge, it is still safer during an earthquake than the old span, ABC news 7 reports. In the event of a massive quake, similar to that of 1906, "the likely result would be that the (old) bridge would shake apart." Caltrans will announce soon whether the bridge will open Labor Day weekend, as originally planned, or postpone until repairs can be completed. [ABC News 7]
