Parks and open spaces spaces are some of the biggest perks of living in San Francisco, so the Board of Supervisors' vote today on the proposed South of Market Skatepark and Dog Park is sure to make folks happy. Located under and adjacent to parts of the Central Freeway near Otis, Stevenson, and Valencia Streets, the new park will feature a 17,000 sq.ft. skate park and a 28,000 sq. ft. dog park and parking area. The technicalities of the project are a little tricky, with the city basically leasing the airspace for the park from Caltrans, who still technically owned it since before the Loma Prieta Earthquake damaged the Central Freeway in 1989. Now the site is just a surface parking lot, but if approved, construction could start this summer with an opening date of March 2014.
