In the pipeline since 2007, the highly acclaimed 8 Octavia has broken ground near the corner of Octavia and Market streets. The Stanley Saitowitz | Natoma Architects design was the winner of the San Francisco Prize Design for the former Central Freeway parcel. The building will feature 48 studio, 1-, and 2-bedroom condos over ground floor retail and 24 parking spaces for cars and 26 bike stalls. Having been tweaked slightly since its original design, the building still feature "shiny boxes" rising from 5 floors up to 8 at the Market Street frontage.
