Lake Merrit Connects

Over the weekend, Oakland celebrated the first in a series of steps to open the channel between Lake Merritt, the Oakland Estuary and San Francisco Bay. This passage, "dammed up for 140 years," is still undergoing more work to get fully clear and obstacle-free. Beautification of the formerly depressingly ignored) land around the water includes a "paved trail, pedestrian bridge and restoration of tidal marsh." [SF Gate/photo via Library of Congress]
