Oak-lyn Watch

Apparently Oakland's greatest challenge moving forward is not its high crime rate, high level of unemployment or severe housing shortage, but escaping San Francisco's shadow. When Oakland's Mayor Quan was asked recently about this very topic she responded: "We're a little bit like Brooklyn. Because Oakland is so much more affordable than San Francisco, the whole arts scene has shifted over here." Food and generally diversity were also given as reasons for Oakland's Brooklyn-like cultural status. [SFist/photo via theoppositecoast]
