Micro- and near-micro-apartment living is on the rise in San Francisco, with 120 units clocking in at 220 sq. ft. a piece in the pipeline and many under 400 sq. ft. already in existence. Supervisor Scott Weiner himself lives in a 490 sq. ft. condo in the Castro, and found it "cathartic to shed half his worldly goods when he moved in 10 years ago." Regardless of personal feelings towards small units, urban planners say the micro-apartments help tackle the city's sky-high rental costs and increasing housing shortage. [SFGate]
