Delicate Demolition

If you think demolishing the old span of the Bay Bridge is going to be easy, think again. "The old bridge is the world's largest armed bow and arrow," according to Caltrans bridge engineer Brian Maroney. "We have to de-string it very carefully or it will go boom!" Translation: engineers must take the bridge apart piece-by-delicate-piece to prevent the 77-year-old structure from partial or total collapse. Construction has already begun, and is expected to take 3-4 years to complete. [Inside Bay Area]
